In 1995, I went to the Middle East on a 'study journey' with about ten other students from the academy I was studying at. We mixed insightful interviews with trips to the environment, where we found Roman and Crusader fortresses, colorful hilltop villages, unique garbage free nature where we could re-baptise in the Jordan river, Western shopping malls, discotheques, Wailing walls, and of course a bunch of churches and religious zealots. It was a relatively quiet period since the Oslo peace agreements had just been signed, the first terror wave called intifada was over, and Israël still had settlements in Gaza, effectively making it hard for hamas to settle all the way like they did after the settlers were removed.
